Fall aeration and overseeding for Charlotte fescue lawns
Our red clay compacts. By late summer a fescue lawn is sitting on soil that water runs off and roots cannot push through, and the summer heat has thinned it. Fall aeration pulls thousands of plugs so air, water and seed get down where they need to be, and overseeding fills the thin spots at the only time of year fescue germinates reliably. Skip it two years running and you will be looking at a renovation instead.

- Turf-type tall fescue blend rated for the transition zone, at 6 to 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft

- A follow-up look at four weeks to catch anything that did not take
What it doesn't cover
- Bermuda and Zoysia lawns; they are aerated in early summer and not seeded
- Full renovation of a lawn that is mostly bare, which we quote as sod or slit-seeding
- Watering. Seed needs it daily for two weeks, and that part is yours

When should it be done?
Mid-September to late October in Charlotte. Soil is still warm, air is cooling, and there is a full season of root growth before summer. April seeding looks good for six weeks and then dies in July.
Can I mow after?
Hold off for about two weeks, then mow high. We time your regular mowing visits around it if you are on the Lawn Plan.
How much do I need to water?
Lightly, every day, for the first two weeks. Then every other day for two more. Miss the first two weeks and the seed will not germinate; that is the one part we cannot do for you.
Will it fix bare patches under my trees?
It will help, but a fescue lawn under a dense willow oak canopy is a losing fight. We will tell you when a shade bed is the honest answer.
