Lawn care and landscaping in Charlotte, NC

Charlotte is home base and it is really two cities for a lawn. Inside Route 4 the streets were planted with willow oaks a century ago and the canopy has closed; those yards are shade fescue, root competition and a leaf season that runs into January. South and west of the loop the subdivisions were built on cleared land and get full sun all day, which is Bermuda and Zoysia country. The wrong grass in the wrong yard is the most common thing we get called to fix.

Charlotte yards, and what they need

Dilworth, Myers Park, Plaza Midwood

Mature willow-oak canopy, 1920s to 1950s brick, small lots. Fescue is the only option, and even fescue thins under a closed canopy. We mow high, overseed hard every fall, and are honest when a corner should become a shade bed instead of a lawn.

Ballantyne, Steele Creek, Berewick

Built since 2000 on cleared land in full sun. Builder Bermuda or Zoysia that wants a low cut, a different fertilizer schedule and no fall seeding at all. Fescue put in by a previous owner is usually the reason a lawn here looks tired in August.

Cecil clay, everywhere

The red soil under most of Mecklenburg County is the Cecil series, and it is the state soil for a reason: it holds water, compacts hard and sheds mulch into the street. Aeration every fall is not optional here, and drainage is where most of our projects start.

What your neighbors say

“Third company we've tried on our Myers Park yard and the first one that told us the truth about the shade. Half of it is now a fern bed and the other half is the best grass we've had.”

“Same two guys every Thursday since March. The HOA letter stopped coming the month we hired them.”
Derek P. · Matthews · Google
“Our two-year-old sod was dying and the builder shrugged. Travis walked it, said compaction, aerated it twice and it came back without resodding. Saved us thousands.”

Charlotte questions

Which Charlotte neighborhoods do you cover?

All of them inside the 485 loop and most of the ones just outside it. If you are within about twenty minutes of SouthPark we are certainly there; further out, check the service areas page or call.

My yard is all shade. Can you make grass grow?

Under a dense willow oak canopy, only partly. We will grow the best fescue the light allows, and we will tell you plainly which corners would look better as a mulched shade bed with hostas and ferns than as thin grass.
