The same spot, before and after

Knee-high grass, foundation shrubs grown over the windows, a bed with nothing in it but old mulch and leaves against the steps. One day with a crew of three: the shrubs came down below the sills, the bed was re-cut and mulched with new hydrangeas, the lawn was cut in stages so it did not shock. The house did not change; the photograph did.

Bare red clay, moss, and a low spot by the fence that held water for days. We fixed the water first with a gravel-lined channel to the low corner, then aerated, topdressed with compost and slit-seeded a shade-tolerant fescue blend in October. This is the following May, from the same spot on the deck.

A strip of packed clay between the driveway and the house, a leggy holly, a cracked path and a downspout splashing onto bare soil. The downspout now runs underground to a river-rock splash bed, the path is pavers on a compacted base, and the strip is pine straw with hollies and liriope. The part that mattered most is the part you cannot see.
